The sewn boards binding with its exposed spine, lies flat when open which makes a perfect surface for artists who like spine for drawing across the full expance of an open page. Based on 18th century books with leather straps and wood boards, this book is adapted to contemporary materials of linen, cloth, acid free paper, binder's board and PVA glue. Each student will complete their own paste papers for their book covers and assemble their own book.

Beth Thielen is a recent recipient of a Rauschenberg Fellowship. She worked as an Artist In Residence through the California Arts Council for over twenty years. Both her works and the works of her residency participants are now a part of various collections such as The J. P. Getty Museum, The Library of Congress Special Collections and many University Art collections.
